Caring for Ragdoll Kittens

Got your Ragdoll kitten home?

Now comes the actual work.

These cats need the right food, regular grooming, vet care, and attention to grow up healthy. Skip the basics and you’ll run into problems later.

Here’s everything you need to know to take care of your Ragdoll kitten. If you haven’t brought yours home yet, check our guide on how to prepare for a Ragdoll kitten first.

Feeding and Nutrition

What to Feed

Feed high-quality kitten food with real protein and healthy fats. Kittens burn through calories fast and need nutrients to grow properly. A mix of wet and dry food works well for most Ragdolls, because wet food adds hydration and variety, while dry kibble helps keep teeth clean.

Stick with reputable brands or whatever your breeder or vet recommends. Skip foods loaded with fillers or artificial ingredients and keep toxic human foods away from your kitten. Chocolate, garlic, and onions can make cats seriously sick.

How Much and How Often

Kittens have small stomachs but big appetites, so they do best with frequent small meals. Feed 3 to 4 times daily until around six months, then switch to 2 meals per day as they mature.

Use the feeding guidelines on the package as your starting point, then adjust based on how your kitten looks. They should fill out nicely without getting chubby. Ragdolls can pack on weight easily, so measure portions instead of free-feeding. Consistent mealtimes also help establish a routine.

Keep fresh water available at all times, especially if they eat mostly dry food. You can offer treats occasionally as rewards, but keep them under 10% of daily calories. And despite the old myth, skip the milk. Most cats are lactose intolerant, so water is their best drink.

Home Environment and Safety

Kitten-Proofing Your Space

Curious kittens get into everything, so take time to kitten-proof before yours arrives.

Hide electrical cords – Bundle or cover them so they can’t chew.
Remove toxic plants and chemicals – Lilies are especially dangerous. Lock away cleaning supplies and medicines.
Secure small items – Rubber bands, coins, anything tiny goes up high. Kittens swallow weird stuff.
Block off hazards – Close small nooks. Make sure windows and balconies have secure screens.

Set up a cozy bed or soft blanket where your kitten can rest. Add a scratching post or two. With these precautions in place, your Ragdoll can explore safely without getting into trouble.

Litter Box Setup

Most Ragdoll kittens arrive already litter trained, but you still need the right setup. Use a low-sided box that’s easy for a small kitten to climb into, and place it in a quiet, accessible spot where they’ll have privacy. For detailed recommendations, see our guide to the best litter boxes for Ragdoll cats.

Unscented, clumping litter works best for most cats. Place your kitten in the box after meals or naps to reinforce the habit. Scoop daily and change the litter regularly. A clean box means fewer accidents and better habits.

If an accident happens, just clean it up and guide them to the box next time. No scolding needed. With consistency, your kitten will get the hang of it quickly.

Grooming and Coat Care

Brushing

That gorgeous semi-long Ragdoll coat needs regular attention to stay tangle-free and reduce shedding around your home. Brush at least once or twice weekly, and start this routine early so your kitten learns to enjoy it. If you’re wondering about shedding and allergies, read our article on whether Ragdoll cats are hypoallergenic.

Use a soft slicker brush or stainless steel comb and work gently through the coat. Pay extra attention to areas that mat easily: behind the ears, under the arms, and on the back legs.

If you find a small knot, hold the fur near the skin and brush it out slowly to avoid pulling. Many Ragdolls actually enjoy being brushed, which makes this a nice bonding time for both of you.

Other Care Tasks

Baths are rarely needed since Ragdolls keep themselves pretty clean. Only bathe your kitten if they get into something messy, using warm water and kitten-safe shampoo. Be sure to dry them thoroughly afterward to keep them warm.

  • Nail trimming: Those claws get sharp. Use proper cat clippers. Trim just the sharp tip. Avoid the pink quick. Start young so they tolerate it.
  • Ears and eyes: Check occasionally. Clean gently with vet-approved methods if needed.
  • Teeth: Introduce a tiny toothbrush with pet-safe toothpaste early. Prevents dental issues later.

Health Care and Vet Visits

Vaccinations and Checkups

Regular vet care is one of the best ways to keep your Ragdoll kitten healthy. Kittens need a series of vaccinations in their first months to protect against common illnesses, plus a rabies shot when they’re old enough. Your vet will keep your kitten on schedule with these shots and monitor their growth and overall health.

Use these visits to ask any questions you have about Ragdoll kitten care. Ragdolls are generally a healthy breed with a lifespan of 12–17 years, but your vet will let you know if there are any specific issues to watch for. Establishing good vet care early means catching potential problems before they become serious.

Spaying/Neutering

Around 5 to 6 months old, talk with your vet about spaying or neutering. This routine surgery prevents unwanted litters and can improve your cat’s behavior and health. Neutered males are less likely to spray urine, and spayed females won’t go into heat.

Also discuss parasite prevention for fleas or worms based on your area’s needs. Consider microchipping your kitten for permanent identification in case they ever get lost.

Socialization and Training

Building Bonds

Ragdolls bond hard with their people, but you have to put in time. Pet them, talk to them, play with them daily. They’ll follow you around wanting to be involved in everything you do.

Let them meet new people, including kids (calm ones who won’t grab or squeeze). Go slow with new experiences so they don’t freak out. If you have other pets, keep the kitten separate at first. Let them smell each other under the door for a few days, then do short supervised meetings. Ragdolls usually get along with dogs and other animals if you introduce them right.

Teaching Good Behavior

Even though Ragdolls are naturally well-behaved, a little training goes a long way. Reward good stuff – using the litter box, scratching the post, gentle play. Use treats, pets, and praise.

When they do something wrong, don’t scream at them. Say no firmly and move them to where they should be.

Scratching the couch? Put them at the scratching post. Jumping on counters? Put them on the floor. Everyone in the house needs to handle bad behavior the same way, or the cat gets confused.

Play and Exercise

Keeping Them Active

Kittens need to burn energy or they’ll tear up your house. Play with them every day using toys they like: feather wands, balls, whatever gets them moving. This also builds your bond with them.

Put away string toys and small parts when you’re done. Unsupervised kittens swallow weird things.

Exercise Options

Even lazy Ragdolls need daily movement as kittens. They’ll have random bursts where they sprint around for no reason. Let it happen. Throw toys for them to chase or use a laser pointer.

Cat trees give them somewhere to climb without getting on your counters. They’re not huge jumpers but they do like height. Swap toys around so they don’t get bored. Puzzle toys work their brain. Balance active time with naps and they’ll stay happy. Wondering if a playmate would help? Read our take on whether two Ragdoll kittens are better than one.
