Both are popular large breeds that make great pets, but they’re different in ways that matter. One probably fits your lifestyle better than the other.
We breed Ragdolls and know plenty of Maine Coon breeders. Here’s what actually separates these two breeds.
Ann Baker created Ragdolls in 1960s California. She used a semi-wild white cat named Josephine who had kittens with unusually calm personalities after a car accident. Baker bred selectively for cats that went limp when held. The whole breed was designed to be the perfect lap cat.
Maine’s state cat developed naturally over generations. Long-haired cats brought by sailors had to survive brutal New England winters. Their size, thick waterproof coat, and tough build came from adapting to harsh weather, not human selection.
Maine Coons run bigger. Males hit 25 pounds while Ragdolls top out around 20. Both take 3-4 years to reach full size.
Soft, silky, medium-long single layer with minimal undercoat that feels like rabbit fur. Always pointed colors with darker ears, face, legs, and tail. Blue eyes across the board. Doesn’t mat as easily as double coats.
Thick waterproof double coat with soft undercoat and shaggy outer layer. They have a big neck ruff and ear tufts like a lynx. Over 75 color combinations are possible, and eyes can be green, gold, copper, or blue.
Ragdolls have soft features and large oval blue eyes. Maine Coons have rectangular, muscular frames with square faces, high cheekbones, and bushy tails as long as their bodies.
They follow you room to room. Greet you at the door. Go limp in your arms when you pick them up. Quiet cats who rarely meow unless something’s actually wrong. True lap cats who want constant physical contact, not just proximity.
Smart, playful, curious. They’ll hang out in the same room but prefer a nearby chair over your lap. Need mental stimulation through puzzle toys and interactive play. Talk to you with chirps, trills, and chattering instead of regular meows. More supervisor than snuggle buddy.
The split is simple. Ragdolls are lap cats seeking physical contact. Maine Coons are companion cats preferring interactive play.
Brush 2-3 times weekly. Single-layer coat doesn’t mat much. Most enjoy grooming as bonding time.
Daily brushing required. That thick double coat mats fast, especially behind ears, under arms, and on back legs. Heavy shedding in spring and fall. Professional grooming 2-4 times yearly helps.
Both shed year-round. Neither works for allergies. Both need to stay indoors because they lack street smarts.
Prone to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart condition where the muscle thickens. Good breeders test parents and do heart scans to reduce risk.
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Some lines have urinary issues. Typical lifespan 15-20 years.
Hip dysplasia from their size. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in some lines. Typical lifespan 12-15 years.
Quality breeders test for these conditions and provide health guarantees
Ragdolls run $2,000-$5,000. Maine Coons run $3,000-$6,000. Price covers genetic testing, vet care, vaccines, quality food, and socialization.
Food (Maine Coons eat more), litter, grooming (Maine Coons cost more for professional grooming), toys, supplies, and routine vet care.
Pet insurance makes sense for breed-specific health risks.
Think about your daily routine when choosing. Do you want a cat that’s a constant companion or one that prefers interactive play sessions? Can you commit to daily grooming or would 2-3 times weekly work better? Space matters too – Ragdolls adapt well to apartments while Maine Coons need more vertical territory for climbing. Noise level is another factor since Ragdolls stay quiet while Maine Coons like to chat.
Can’t pick? Visit a cattery and spend time with both breeds. Some people get one of each since the personalities work well together.
Individual cats vary. A breeder who knows their kittens can match you with the right personality regardless of general breed traits.

Both breeds are great with children, but in different ways. Ragdolls are known for being very patient and tolerant—they rarely scratch or bite when handled gently. Maine Coons are playful and fun, making them great interactive friends for kids. Choose Ragdolls for very young children who need a gentle lap cat, or Maine Coons for older children who want an active playmate.
Both breeds are friendly with other pets when introduced properly. Ragdolls are more laid-back. Maine Coons are more playful. Both can live happily with dogs and other cats.
Ragdoll males weigh 15-20 pounds, females 10-15 pounds. Maine Coon males weigh 15-25 pounds, females 10-15 pounds. Both take 3-4 years to reach full size.
